Study cites risk in some mobile phones

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A Swedish study has found using some mobile phones for at least 10 years can cause a benign tumor on the auditory nerve.

The study at several sites covered only analog phones since it was the only type in use for 10 years when the survey was made. It was not known if there would be similar results with digital phones.

The tumor usually is confined to the side of the head where the phone is usually held, said the study by scientists at Karolinska Institutet.

The tumor normally grows slowly over a period of years before it is diagnosed. It occurs in less than one adult per 100,000 per year.

A total of about 150 acoustic neuroma patients took part in the study. The risk of acoustic neuroma was almost doubled for persons who started to use their mobile phone at least 10 years prior to diagnosis.

GALAXY COLLIDE NASA
This undated NASA image shows two galaxies that are slowly colliding and possibly, in hundreds of millions of years, only one galaxy will remain. Although it is likely that no stars in the two galaxies will directly collide, the gas, dust and ambient magnetic fields do interact directly. These galaxies, part of the vast Hydra-Centaurus supercluster of galaxies, spans over 100 thousand light-years across and is located about 100 million light-years away.
