WARBOYS, England, April 17 (UPI) -- A school in the village that carried out England's last hangings for witchcraft, when it was still a crime, has announced it will do away with its witch emblem.

Administrators at Warboys Community Primary School, which has used the image of a witch riding a broomstick as its logo for more than 60 years, announced their intentions after the school received poor marks on a recent inspection, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.

The school is located in the town of Warboys, where England's last witchcraft executions took place in 1593.

"The school is aware that some parents choose not to send their children to Warboys and cite the witch as one of the reasons why," the school said in a statement. "It is also known that some potential teachers and head teachers have cited the witch logo as a reason not to apply for posts."

However, parents and local officials said the logo is not the root of the school's problem.

"I can't believe that the people who are responsible for our children's education are so blinkered," said Parish Councilor Sally Pryke. "Parents said they would rather money was spent on the children's education, school books and equipment than replacing the logo."
