DES MOINES, Iowa, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Some senior citizens in Des Moines, Iowa, are set to begin league play in virtual bowling thanks to the technology of the Nintendo Wii.
The seniors' ability with Wii joysticks was on display at the Urbandale Senior Center, as they participated in a Nintendo Wii Sports bowling demonstration, The Des Moines Register reported Saturday.
The Nintendo Wii uses two separate controls, one in each hand, allowing a participant's movements to be mimicked by an on-screen character.
The success and popularity of senior Wii events like the one at the center Friday is due in part to the health benefits associated with the video game system, an International Council on Active Aging official said.
Council chief executive Colin Milner told the Register the Wii's unique set-up allows seniors a chance to engage in their favorite pastimes while remaining active mentally and physically.
"When you put the two together, you have bingo," Milner said. "Well, not really bingo."
