ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 2 (UPI) --
Two Florida cities have resolved an ugly court battle over which can call itself "The City Beautiful."
Orlando adopted the slogan in 1908, and has even included it in the city seal, the Orlando Sentinel reported Sunday. Miami suburb Coral Gables adopted it in 1933.
The squabble between the two cities began last year when Coral Gables tried to trademark the phrase, which would have required Orlando to stop using it -- including removing it from the city seal, the Sentinel said.
In response, Orlando moved to block the trademark.
Coral Gables then offered a compromise that would allow both cities to use the slogan, but no others. That, however, would have deprived cities such as Storm Lake, Iowa, and Kansas City, Mo., of the right to their mottos.
In the agreement finalized by the two cities, both agreed to forego trademark efforts, and limit use of the slogan to their geographical areas.
"I don't think anybody should have exclusive rights to use 'The City Beautiful,' " Orlando City Attorney Mayanne Downs told the newspaper. "We don't need exclusive rights -- it's not like we're running around selling T-shirts."© 2007 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
