STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- A Swedish inventor may have found the answer to a lamp post corrosion problem created by dogs relieving themselves on lamp posts -- a doggie urinal.

Lennart Jarlebro said he learned about the matter from reading an article about the corrosive effects of dogs' urine, The Local reported. Wanting to do something to preserve the lamp posts, Jarlebro began designing a public toilet for pooches so they wouldn't use the streetlights.

"There is a big problem with dogs and lamp posts, so I decided to make something to take away the ammonia and urine," he told The Local.

The urinal consists of a rubber cup attached to the lamp post base with a pipe that diverts the urine away from the pole.

Once he manufactures a prototype, Jarlebro said he planned to marketing his product before local councils across Sweden.

"This innovation will save councils an awful lot of money," he said. "The average lamp post has a life span of 30 years but my invention is likely to add a further 15 years."
