Teachers Brenda Adelson and Bonnie McCullough had just moved from the front of the room when the buck burst in at 10 a.m. Tuesday, the Asbury Park (N.J.) Press reported.

The deer trotted through the classroom into a hall, into the vacant nurse's office, the staff lounge and finally into the empty cafeteria of Lloyd Road Elementary School.

The school went into lockdown as police and school employees used upturned tables to corral the buck, the report said. It was nudged toward a door and freed but apparently spotted its own reflection in another window and tried to ram it. The deer then ran away.

Larry Katz, chairman of the Rutgers Department of Animal Sciences told the newspaper this is the time of the year when bucks begin fighting one another for mating rights and the deer likely mistook its reflection for a rival.

There were no human nor animal injuries reported.
