Woman creates canine cosmetics line

NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- A New York woman who created the Sexy Beast line of beauty products for dogs says she expects the business to reach $1 million in sales this year.

Renee Ryan, a 12-year veteran of the beauty industry, said the biggest challenge she's faced in selling the doggie perfume and other canine cosmetics is convincing traditional retailers to carry the products, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

"They're kind of confused (how to market it). Should they put them with human fragrances? Or with the pet products?" Ryan said.

Ryan said a line of products aimed at keeping pooches smelling fresh in between groomings seemed like a natural extension of the growing popularity of designer pet products.

"There were a lot of high-end accessories," Ryan said, "and there was just nothing following in grooming/beauty."

Ryan said she hopes the products, which are currently sold in high-end pet boutiques and specialty beauty stores in New York and California, will soon be made available in mainstream stores.

"I'd like to see us go more international," she said. "I would like to see us in some of the more traditional human stores."

UFO fest drops some activities

ROSWELL, N.M., July 2 (UPI) -- Several activities planned for the Roswell, N.M., UFO Festival were canceled due to budget restrictions but coordinators insist the event is worth attending.

The festival originally came in at $90,000 over its $180,000 budget but city councilors approved an additional $60,000 in lodger's tax funds for the event, the Roswell Daily Record reported Monday.

Festival Coordinator Guy Malone said the committee was short "on the wish list, not on commitments."

Malone said nixed "wish list" items included after dark "alien abductions," which featured a helicopter shining a light down on a specific person who would then receive gifts from local high school cheerleaders dressed in alien costumes; cooling tents outfitted with water, shade and misting fans; a Crash and Burn soap box derby contest that would have offered $2,000 in prizes; and $5,000 in official festival merchandise.

The UFO festival marks the 60th anniversary of an alleged flying saucer crash in Roswell.

Potential buyers list short for Aspen home

ASPEN, Colo., July 2 (UPI) -- A real estate broker selling an expensive home in Aspen, Colo., said the price of the home makes the potential buyers list short.

Joshua Saslove said the Hala Ranch estate, which was built on 95 acres of property in 1991 for former Saudi ambassador Prince Bandar bin Sultan, is listed at $135 million -- the highest price for a single-family home currently for sale in the United States, The New York Times reported Monday.

Saslove said he has received about 1,000 requests to tour the home since it went on the market in October but he and lawyers for the Saudi prince have granted only 11 of the requests. He said the price of the home means it would most likely be a billionaire who buys the mansion as a second, third or fourth home.

That stipulation keeps the list of potential buys relatively short -- Forbes magazine reports that there are 946 billionaires in the world.

Texas town on the market

ALBERT, Texas, July 2 (UPI) -- The owner of the town of Albert, Texas, which claims a population of four but has only one actual resident, is putting the town up for sale.

Albert owner Bobby Cave is asking $2.5 million for the town, which includes a modern ice house stocked with beer, an aging dance hall and ancient live oaks, the San Antonio Express-News reported Monday.

The town, about 50 miles north of San Antonio, was founded in 1877 and boasted a population of 50 during the 1920s, when the town included a school house that former President Lyndon B. Johnson is reputed to have attended for a short time.

"It is for a guy who has it all, but can't brag to his friends that he owns a town, so he needs to own a town," Cave said.

"My ideal buyer would be someone who falls in love with it and not just wants to make money out of it."

The Albert Ice House draws crowds of up to 300 on weekends but bartender Jody Ewen is the only permanent resident of the town, Cave said.
