Shocked carjackers flee armed victim

HARPER WOODS, Mich., May 13 (UPI) -- Two men who tried a carjacking this weekend were shocked when their would-be victim pulled out a firearm and chased them as they tried to escape.

Police in Harper Woods, Mich., told The Detroit News that when the two would-be thieves tried to steal a man's car Saturday, they learned that a retired Detroit Police officer made for a poor choice of victim.

One of the men was carrying a shotgun. Police said the unidentified former officer pulled his own gun -- and got off one shot as the men fled in a stolen Dodge Durango truck.

No one was harmed in the attempted carjacking.

Police later found the truck abandoned, but saw no sign of the shocked would-be thieves, the newspaper said.
