JAKARTA, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Indonesian Deputy Speaker Zainal Maarif was fired by the Islamist Parti Bintang Reformasi -- Reform Star Party -- for taking a second wife.

The PBR showed its intolerance for polygamy when Zainal, who had been deputy speaker for two years, married Yenni Natalia Lodewijk, the Bernama News Agency reported.

The PBR Central Leadership Committee decided to remove Zainal from office at its meeting Thursday, said Committee Head Ade Daud Nasution and Secretary Rusman Ali.

The main reason listed for firing the deputy speaker was that PBR was protecting the interests of women and discouraging polygamy.
