Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Guitarist Irving Ashby was born this day in 1920 in Somerville, Mass. He followed Oscar Moore in Nat King Cole's trio for five years beginning in 1947.


Trombonist Cutty Cutshall was born this day in Huntington County, Pa., in 1911. As a member of Benny Goodman's band from 1940 to 1942, he and Lou McGarrity formed one of the best two-man trombone sections ever to work with the band. Cutshall died in 1968.


Pianist Danilo Perez was born this day in 1966 in Panama City, Panama. Perez came into the jazz spotlight years ago as a member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra, the trumpet great's last major jazz group.

On the New York jazz scene... The Manhattan Transfer's 30th anniversary celebration is at the Blue Note tonight and this afternoon's East Meets West Jazz Brunch features the Chihiro Yamanaka trio. The Winard Harper Sextet is at the Jazz Standard. McCoy Tyner's big band is at Iridium. Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at Smoke tonight.


In and around Boston... The Chick Corea New Trio with Avishai Cohen and Jeff Ballard is The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight.


Jamey Haddad is at Nighttown in Cleveland tonight and Monday.


In and around Chicago... Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles. The Kimberly Gordan trio is at the Green Mill. Henry Johnson's Organ Express is at the Jazz Showcase. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium tonight. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne.


In New Orleans... the Earl Brown trio is at Cafe Sbisa. The Hot Club of New Orleans swing band is at the Circle Bar. Shannon Powell's quartet is at Donna's. Linnzi Zaorski, Delta Royale and Warren Battiste are at El Matador. Tim Laughlin and John Royen are at Dos Jefes. Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar.

Ryan Burrage and His Rhythmakers are at Fritzel's. Big Sam's Funky Nation and Evan Howard are at the Funky Butt. The Johnny Vidacovich trio and the Trombone Shorty Brass Band are at the Maple Leaf. The Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. Joanne Brackeen is at Snug Harbor.


In California... the second annual Desert Big Band and Jazz Party is underway at the Palm Springs Riviera Resort and Racquet Club. Tonight's big band headliner is an all-star Stan Kenton alumni band led by Bob Curnow. It includes Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Buddy Childers, Jack Nimitz, Carl Saunders, Mike Vax, Peter Erskine and Bill Trujillo.

Long John Oliva's Afro-Cuban Timba Jazz Septet is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. Roger Neumann is at Spazio in Sherman Oaks with The Marty Harris trio. Susie Hansen's Latin jazz band is at the Spaghettini Italian Grill in Seal Beach. Taj Mahal's trio is at Yoshi's in Oakland.
