ORLANDO, Fla., May 16 (UPI) -- Symptoms of lower urinary tract symptoms may be linked to falling in elderly men, U.S. urologists said.

The researchers found that men over age 65 with moderate symptoms of lower urinary tract problems had a 21 percent increased risk of falling twice in one year, but those with severe symptoms had a 63 percent increased risk. Urological medications to treat the symptoms did not decrease the risk.

The diagnosis and awareness of lower urinary tract symptoms as a risk factor should help caregivers and patients take precautions. Ensuring a clear path to the restroom may also help prevent falls, the researchers said.

Symptoms most strongly associated with falling included urinary urgency, the need to push or strain to initiate urination, urinary frequency and getting up at night to urinate.

The study findings are scheduled to be presented at the 103rd annual scientific meeting of the American Urological Association in Orlando, Fla.

The findings are also published in the Journal of Urology.
