Ralph Semb, chairman of the board of trustees for Shriners Hospitals, told The Gazette newspaper in a telephone interview as much as $100 million will be spent on a new facility, with construction of the new hospital set to begin next spring.
It will house outpatient clinics, operating rooms and research laboratories, as well as beds for short-term stays, Semb said.
The existing hospital has 40 beds, but the new facility will have fewer, although Semb said an exact number hadn't been determined.
The new facility will be built adjacent to and in tandem with the future Montreal Children's Hospital. Gary Morrison, chairman of the board of governors of the Montreal Shriners Hospital said the two hospitals will attempt to avoid duplicating services and might even be heated by a mutual boiler system, the newspaper said.
