Breast, cervical cancer screening cost low

ATLANTA, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- The median cost of providing screening for under-or uninsured, low-income women for breast cancer was $94 and $56 for cervical cancer, a U.S. study found.
Dr. Donatus U. Ekwueme of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and colleagues found the median cost per breast cancer detected was $10,566 and $13,340 for cervical cancer.
Many deaths from breast and cervical cancer would be avoidable through the increased use of mammography and Pap tests, Ekwueme said.
Using data from July 2003 through June 2004 from nine of the 68 National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Programs among medically under-served, low-income women, the researchers found 58.2 percent of the program's resources were allocated to clinical services, including screening and diagnostic follow-up, referral for treatment, and case management. The remainder of NBCCEDP's funds were used to support non-screening activities such as data management, public education/outreach, professional education and quality assurance and improvement.
Congress established the NBCCEDP in 1990 to provide support and assistance to increase breast and cervical cancer screening among medically under-served, low-income women.
The findings are published online in the journal Cancer ahead of the Feb. 1 print edition.
