Quong Hop & Co. of South San Francisco, Calif., initiated the recall Sept. 20 after Washington state Department of Agriculture testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in a package of Soy Deli firm organic nigari tofu.
Listeria infections can cause serious and sometimes fatal illnesses. because of possible contamination.
The recalled products were distributed on the West Coast and in the Midwest through supermarkets and natural food stores. Although primarily sold in Washington, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Oregon, Nevada. Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota, the FDA made the recall a nationwide action to "ensure consumer and trade awareness."
