MPAA wants Pirate Bay to pay

Published: May 9, 2008 at 2:03 AM
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 8 (UPI) -- The Motion Picture Association of America said The Pirate Bay, a Swedish file-sharing site, owes it $15 million for illegally distributing films.

The Swedish News Agency TT said the amount relates to the losses MPAA members suffered as an indirect result of the illegal distribution of a "Harry Potter" film, "The Pink Panther," "Syriana" and "Walk the Line," as well as the first season of the TV show "Prison Break."

Gottfrid Svartholm Varg, co-founder of The Pirate Bay, said the MPAA's allegations are without merit.

"These are very well developed fantasies. They have a good sense of imagination," Varg told The Local.

Varg and his fellow Bay co-founders -- Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundstrom -- have been indicted for allegedly being accessories to violating copyright law.

A date for the trial has not yet been set, TT said.
