NEW YORK, March 26 (UPI) -- Leval Lyde, the U.S. rapper known professionally as Cavlar, has been shot in the chest and killed in Brooklyn, N.Y., police said.

He was 36.

The father of three was gunned down early Tuesday after a confrontation with the shooter and two of his friends, who took off after the shot was fired, the New York Post said. Lyde had been on his way to meet a promoter.

Police reportedly are looking into whether Lyde's death might be rap-related.

"I saw a lady running (and) came outside and she said, 'They're killing each over there!'" store owner Amilcar Salvador told the Post.

Cavlar was known on hip-hop Web sites for his association with Earthquake Camp Records and the popular "Step Your Game Up" DVDs.

He also toured with Lil Jon and the Ying Yang Twins in 2004, and was featured on Hot 97's "D.J. Kay Slay Drama Hour" and WBLS' "Wendy Williams Show," the Post said.
