HOUSTON, March 24 (UPI) -- Famed Tejano singer-songwriter Emilio Navaira III underwent emergency brain surgery after he was critically injured in a tour bus smashup in Houston.

Bellaire police said the bus carrying Navaira and his band Rio crashed into traffic barrels near the Southwest Freeway early Sunday, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Navaira, 45, was one of eight people hurt in the accident.

The Grammy Award-winning recording artist was listed in critical condition and receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Memorial Hermann Hospital, the report said.

Police told KPRC they haven't determined who was driving the bus.

Two other people involved in the accident were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, then treated and released.

The other five victims were taken to Ben Taub Hospital where two were listed in critical condition, police said.
