Scorsese to make Bob Marley documentary

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorsese is set to make a documentary about Bob Marley -- reportedly with the blessing of the late reggae icon's family.

Variety.com said the project would reunite Scorsese with Steve Bing's Shangri-La Entertainment and the international sales agent Fortissimo Films -- the team behind Scorsese's Rolling Stones concert film "Shine a Light."

"Shine a Light" opened the Berlin Film Festival Thursday.

The Marley documentary is slated to hit theaters Feb. 6, 2010, to coincide with what would have been Marley's 65th birthday, the trade paper said. The Jamaican singer died of cancer in 1981.

"I am thrilled that the Marley family will finally have the opportunity to document our father's legacy and are truly honored to have Mr. Scorsese guide the journey," Marley's son Ziggy said.

Scorsese's films include "The Departed," "The Aviator," "Gangs of New York," "GoodFellas," "Taxi Driver," "Mean Streets" and "Raging Bull."
