Bardem, Blanchett, Cotillard earn Globes

BEVERLY HILLS , Calif., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Javier Bardem, Cate Blanchett and Marion Cotillard were declared newly minted Golden Globe winners at a press conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., Sunday.

Blanchett won the prize for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a film for her work in "I'm Not There," while Bardem earned the equivalent in the actor category for his chilling turn in "No Country for Old Men."

"La Vie en Rose" star Marion Cotillard grabbed the award for best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy film and "Ratatouille" was named best animated film.

The traditional Globes gala and telecast, which honors the previous year's achievements in film and television, was replaced by an hourlong announcement of the winners, as a result of the Writers Guild of America strike against producers.

The WGA vowed to picket the ceremony if it was produced by Dick Clark Productions, a struck company, and aired on NBC, a struck network. The Screen Actors Guild then announced its members would not cross a WGA picket line to get into the event.

Once the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the Golden Globe awards, said it was taking full control of the event and would announce the winners of its prizes at a news conference open to all media, the WGA said it would not picket the occasion.

However, no award recipients were on hand as the winners of the Globes were announced in the Beverly Hilton hotel's International Ballroom, Variety.com said.

The winners were revealed by television entertainment journalists from shows like "The Insider," CNN's "Showbiz Tonight," E!, "Extra," "Inside Edition" and "Entertainment Tonight," the trade paper said.
