Earlier this week the Writers Guild of America turned down a request for a waiver that would allow members to write for the Golden Globes awards show. The guild also denied an appeal for a waiver that would allow the use of clips from films and past Oscars shows in the upcoming Oscar presentation.
The guild did, however, grant a waiver so scribes could write for the Independent Spirit Awards.
"The Writers Guild is picking and choosing which awards shows will be able to go on uninterrupted and which shows it will picket and disrupt," the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said in a statement Friday. "By not granting waivers to the Academy Awards and Golden Globes programs, it will bring harm to nominees as well as audiences around the world. Imagine if you had worked hard your entire career in the entertainment business and you have a once-in-a-lifetime shot at being a nominee for an Oscar or a Golden Globe. Then, thanks to the Writers Guild picketing, you're not able to show up on the big night."
