PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., July 24 (UPI) -- Video console sales, paced by Nintendo's Wii, were up a whopping 44 percent to $6.1 billion, U.S. sales data for the first half of 2007 show.

Wii outsold Sony's Playstation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 combined, Variety reported Monday. The Wii DS version outsold Sony's PSP, Wii's hand-held device competitor, and is the top-selling video game device overall, data from industry tracker NPD Group showed.

Wii outsold the 360 and PS3, with 2.1 million units sold compared with just over 2 million for the other two.

The Port Washington, N.Y., research company also reported game sales rose by 24 percent, or $2.9 billion.

Nintendo's "Pokemon" franchise claimed the No. 1 and No. 3 spots for video game sales, with "Diamond" and "Pearl" DS games combining for more than 2.8 million units sold in the United States.

Sony's "God of War" had a strong showing for the first six months, as the PS2-only second installment sold more than 1 million units.

Activision's "Guitar Hero 2" was the only third-party game -- its publisher doesn't make consoles -- in the top 10. The 360 and Playstation 2 versions combined sold more than 1.8 million units.
