'Got eBay?' exhibits eclectic collectibles

SHELBURNE, Vt., May 29 (UPI) -- Porche posters, the Koran and antique maps have one thing in common: They belong to an eclectic, celebrity-driven exhibit at Vermont's Shelburne Museum.

Museum Director Stephan Jost and his staff came up with the exhibition, "Got eBay? Celebrity Collections Created Online," because the museum's founder was a pack rat, the Boston Globe reported Tuesday. For the show, the museum gave notable people -- including comic Jerry Seinfeld, Mick Jagger's former wife, Bianca, NASCAR driver Keven Lepage, New York-based musician-artist John Lurie, and Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas -- $1,000 each to bid for items on the Internet auction site, creating their own collections.

Seinfeld contributed the Porsche posters as well as a early-1970s Heuer Camaro watch.

Jagger contributed the paperback edition of the Koran in her collection of American history and human rights pieces. She's also including a March 1974 Vogue with her posing on the cover wearing a rhinestone veil because "I wanted to be present at my installation."

Douglas bought several Vermont-related items, including antique maps, an old Farmer's Almanac and 19th-century copies of the Rutland Herald.

"It shows that e-commerce can occur in pastoral locations like Vermont," Douglas said.

Diddley back in Florida; begins rehab

GAINESVILLE, Fla., May 29 (UPI) -- Rock 'n' roll icon Bo Diddley, who suffered a stroke earlier this month, has been transferred to a rehabilitation facility near his Florida home.

Diddley was hospitalized in Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha since May 13 when he suffered a stroke while touring, E! News reported. He was released Thursday.

Diddley has begun speech and occupational therapy at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, publicist Susan Clary said in a statement Tuesday. He is expected to remain at the facility for two weeks, then will continue therapy on an out-patient basis.

Considered a founder of rock 'n' roll, Diddley's beat drove such classics as "Bo Diddley," "Say Man" and "Who Do You Love?" and influenced generations of rock artists, including Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, U2 and The Clash. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

Planners say 30th Elvis Week could be huge

MEMPHIS, May 29 (UPI) -- Officials in Memphis are bracing for a tourist invasion as Graceland celebrates the 30th Elvis Week, a commemoration of music, magic and memories of the King.

Hotel rooms are being snapped up three months in advance of the Aug. 11-19 celebration, The (Memphis) Commercial-Appeal reported Tuesday. Major events during the week already are sold out.

Five years ago, the 25th anniversary celebration broke records with an estimated 75,000 tourists, said Jack Soden, Elvis Presley Enterprises chief executive officer. He said he realized the 30th could be bigger when tickets went on sale for the anniversary concert at FedExForum.

"For the 25th anniversary, we spent all summer selling tickets to the concert," Soden said. "This one sold out without even trying."

Soden said interest in this year's milestone 30th year can be attributed to aggressive marketing, including a new nationwide advertising campaign, and an inaugural worldwide Elvis Tribute Artist contest with finalists competing in an Elvis Week showdown.

"Elvis is getting bigger all over the world. We say it, and I know it sounds like a company fight song, but it's true," says Soden, who helped open Graceland as a tourist attraction in 1982.

Woman loses case to get Potter off shelves

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga., May 29 (UPI) -- The chronicles of Harry Potter will remain in county school libraries in Georgia after a judge Tuesday rejected a woman's plea to have the books removed.

In seeking their removal from school book shelves, Laura Mallory of Loganville argued that the Harry Potter series is harmful to children and promoted the occult and witchcraft, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

"I've done the best I can with all of this," Mallory said after the hearing before Gwinnett Superior Judge Ronnie Batchelor.

She said she may take her case to a federal court.

Since she launched her anti-Potter crusade in 2005, Mallory has taken her case -- and lost -- to the school where her children attend, the Gwinnett County Board of Education and the Georgia Board of Education.

Mallory -- who said she hasn't read any books in the series -- based her arguments partly on testimonials and Internet articles by conservative Christian authors she's posted on her Web site.
