WASHINGTON, April 24 (UPI) --
First-time claims for unemployment insurance declined in the week ending April 19, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.
The department said the 342,000 initial claims on the week was a decrease of 33,000 claims from the previous week.
The four-week average was down 7,250 to 369,000.
The U.S. unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.1 percent.
Statistics on states for the week ending April 12, shows claims rose highest in California with 8,791, followed by Florida with 4,281 and Michigan with 2,943.
The largest decreases for the week ending April 12 were reported in Kentucky with 2,502, Oregon with 1,646 and South Carolina with 1,543 fewer claims.
