Retail sales dropped during week

WASHINGTON, April 22 (UPI) -- Retail sales in the United States declined 0.7 percent for the week ended April 19, the International Council of Shopping Centers-USB reported Tuesday.

The increase follows a 0.9 percent increase for the week ending April 12.

On a year-over-year basis sales during the week grew by 1.4 percent.

Retail spending is up against "headwinds from rising gasoline prices further weakening discretionary purchasing power," the report said.

Gasoline prices during the week were 22.3 percent higher than a year ago, and 12 cents per gallon higher than a week ago, the report said.
