WASHINGTON, April 15 (UPI) -- Retail sales in the United States increased 0.9 percent for the week ended April 12, the International Council of Shopping Centers-USB reported Tuesday.

The increase follows a 0.7 percent increase for the week ending April 5, which followed two weeks of declines.

On a year-over-year basis sales on the week grew by 1.8 percent "it's strongest performance since March 1," the report said.

The weather, 6.4 degrees warmer on average than the same week a year ago, helped retailers, the report said, "but the economic headwinds for the consumer continue to strengthen with gasoline prices moving to a new record high."

Gas prices for unleaded regular averaged $3.389 per gallon during the week in the United States, the report said.
