The CPSC said Cabot Stains Inc. of Newburyport, Mass., a division of the Valspar Corp. (NYSE:VAL), recalled about 24,000 cans of stain because the cleaner might react with metal foil residue on the packaging, releasing heat and chlorine gas.
The recall involves Cabot Composite Deck Cleaner, a granular concentrate that, when mixed with water, is used to clean composite surfaces such as decks, railings, steps, fences and siding. It was sold in a two-pound plastic container. The number 3502 appears at the bottom of the front of the label.
The cleaner, manufactured in the United States, was sold nationwide from February 2007 through February 2008 for about $20.
Consumers can return the cleaner for full refund, but if the container appears to be deformed or if it feels hot to the touch, people are urged to call Cabot at 877-755-3336 to arrange for the safe handling of the product.
