TOKYO, March 28 (UPI) --
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, encouraged by projected demand, announced Friday it will make Japan's first passenger jet to be ready by 2012.
The aerospace company said it expects the project to be profitable because of anticipated orders from airlines including Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, Kyodo news service reported.
The company, which also makes the H-2A rockets, will provide 60 percent of the $1 billion earmarked for the project. Other investors will include Toyota Motor Corp. and trading houses, the report said.
The new jet will be called Mitsubishi Regional Jet and will seat 70 to 90 passengers.
The only other such domestic production in Japan since World War II was the propeller-driven YS-11 which was stopped in 1973, the report said.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
