Avon recalls Chinese-made warming bears

WASHINGTON, March 27 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of approximately 113,000 Chinese-made Avon-brand plush warming polar bears.

The CPSC said the importer of the "Cozy Warming Bears" -- Avon Products Inc. of New York -- initiated the voluntary recall when it was discovered the warming pouch inside the bear can overheat and ignite when heated in a microwave oven, posing a fire and burn hazard.

Avon said it has received 41 reports of the warming polar bear overheating, including six reports of minor burns.

The recalled white plush bears have a red hat and brown nose. They are about 17 inches long and come with a buckwheat-filled pouch that's heated in a microwave oven and then inserted into an opening in the bear's stomach. "Avon Products" is printed on a white tag sewn onto the bear.

The bears were sold exclusively by Avon independent sales representatives and at www.avon.com from July 2007 through February 2008 for about $13.

Consumers can return the buckwheat-filled pouch for a full refund. Avon is contacting consumers who purchased the warming bears, and consumers can contact the company at 877-217-0916.
