WASHINGTON, March 25 (UPI) --
Retail sales in the United States decreased 0.4 percent for the week ended March 22, the International Council of Shopping Centers-USB reported Tuesday.
The drop is a turnaround from the previous week, when retail store sales rose 0.4 percent.
On a year-over-year basis sales grew by a "sluggish" 1.0 percent, the report said.
It was the fifth consecutive week to register colder temperatures from the same week a year ago, which helped keep shoppers away from the malls.
"Customer traffic improved due to Easter but sales were subdued -- in part -- because of cool weather and soft apparel demand," the report said.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
