WASHINGTON, March 20 (UPI) -- First-time claims for unemployment insurance rose to 378,000 in the week ending March 15, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.

The gain of 22,000 claims bumped the four-week moving average up 6,000 to 365,250, the report said. The four-week average a year ago was 324,000.

New York state saw a significant decrease in claims on the week with drop off of 13,504 due to fewer layoffs in the transportation and service industries, the report said.

Illinois, Tennessee, Ohio, Florida, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and California saw modest increases, the report said.
