In recent weeks, the dollar's decline has given over to commodity speculation as investors looked for fluctuating prices to provide a lift to their portfolios.
At the close on Monday the Dow Jones industrial average gained 21.16 points to close 0.18 percent up at 11,972.25 points.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined Monday, off 0.9 percent to 1,276.60 points, down 11.54 points.
The Nasdaq composite index slipped 1.6 percent to 2,177.01 points, down 35.48 points.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury note gained 14/32 to yield 3.336 percent.
The euro traded at $1.5732 Monday from $1.5671 Sunday, while the dollar traded at 97.32 yen from 96.90 yen Monday morning.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei average lost 454.09 points Monday to fall to 11,787.51 points, down 3.71 percent.
In London, the FTSE 100 index lost 155.30 points Monday to close at 5,476.40, down 2.76 percent.
