NEW YORK, March 17 (UPI) -- A New York state manufacturing index abruptly contracted to a record low in March, the New York Federal Reserve Bank reported Monday.

The bank's monthly index, which combines a variety of economic factors, fell to minus-22.2 from a minus-11.7 in February, the report said.

The figure "eclipsed" the record low of minus-19.6 set in November 2001, the report said.

New orders rose "modestly," the report said, but still remained in "negative territory," while shipments declined and the prices-paid index reached its highest level since 2006, the report said.

In the survey that goes out to 175 of New York's manufacturers, 41 percent said conditions had declined over the month, while 19 percent said conditions had improved.
