Chinese-made toasters are recalled

Published: March 10, 2008 at 12:52 PM
WASHINGTON, March 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 482,000 Hamilton Beach and Proctor-Silex toasters due to a safety hazard.

The CPSC said the Chinese-made toasters, distributed by Hamilton Beach Brands Inc. of Glen Allen, Va., can remain "on" after toasting and might ignite flammable items touching the toaster.

Hamilton Beach said it had received at least 63 reports of toasters that remained "on" despite being in the "up" position. There were no reports of injuries or fires.

The CPSC said the recalled Hamilton Beach and Proctor-Silex toasters were sold nationwide from August through February in black, red, white, chrome or brushed chrome with 2-slice or 4-slice openings.

Only specific series codes of each model are included in the recall. The model number and series codes are printed on the bottom of the toasters. A complete listing of the recalled toasters and their model numbers is available at http://www.hamiltonbeach.com/recall-info/safety-recall/.
