UAW, American Axle to resume talks

DETROIT, March 5 (UPI) -- American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. and the United Auto Workers union are set to resume contract talks Thursday, The Detroit Free Press reported.

The supplier's 3,600 UAW workers walked off the job Feb. 26 demanding higher wages. The strike rippled through General Motors Corp. which temporarily closed four plants due to a shortage of parts.

Thursday's meeting will be the first formal discussions between the parties since the walkout began. The company has asked for concessions to stay competitive.

American Axle wants to cut wage and benefits to $20 to $30 per hour, the newspaper said. Wages at some U.S. auto parts suppliers are averaging $14 per hour.
