U.S. markets slide on Monday

NEW YORK, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- U.S. stock indexes fell early and stayed low Monday, as investors showed concern that the financial sector would continue to show signs of decline.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 108.03 points at the close in New York, off 0.8 percent to 12,635.16.

The Standard & Poor's 500 was down 1.05 percent, or 30.51 points, at 1,380.82.

The Nasdaq composite index was down 1.136 percent, off 26.64 points to 2,382.85.

At the close on the New York Stock Exchange, 1,267 stocks were up and 1,867 were down with 3.5 billion shares traded.

The 10-year note dropped 14/32, yielding 3.648 percent.

The euro traded at $1.4834, compared to $1.4832 early Monday, while the dollar traded at 106.72 yen, from 106.733 yen early Monday.

In London, the FTSE 100 dropped to 6,026.20, down 3 points or 0.05 percent.

Japan's the Nikkei average rose 362.54 or 2.69 percent to 13,859.70.
