NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Technical problems forced operators of the Webkinz Web site to shut it down for more than 24 hours, disappointing children who got Webkinz toys for Christmas.

The popular stuffed animals come with login information for the site, which features games and other activities, New York Newsday reported Sunday. But the toys' manufacturer, Ganz, was forced to take it down at 3:30 p.m. Thursday after hours of glitches. It was not up again until 4 p.m. the next day.

Typically, the company takes the site off-line at midnight.

Last week was the "worst possible timing" for programming problems, Elaine Parsons, Ganz' director of operations said.

Webkinz' site was not the only one to be affected by high volume over the holidays, the Daily News reported. Retailers Wal-Mart, Sears, Kmart and Lands' End had trouble processing gift cards the day after Christmas.
