DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F) plans to introduce a limited-edition 2008 Mustang Bullitt in honor of the Mustang actor Steve McQueen drove in the 1968 "Bullitt" thriller film.

The new car, starting at $31,075, including shipping, goes on sale in January, Ford said.

Ford slots this 315-horsepower Mustang between the Shelby GT and the Mustang GT, The Detroit News reported.

It is not merely a Highland Green Mustang GT 390 fastback with a fancy badge on the deck lid, the newspaper said. Ford has added power to its 4.6-liter V-8 engine and performance to its ride, it said.

The Dearborn, Mich., automaker also removed the silver Mustang silhouette from the Bullitt's grille and replaced it with a thin chrome border.

"Bullitt," which won an Academy Award for best film editing, is most-remembered for its central car chase scene through the streets of downtown San Francisco, one of the earliest and most influential car chase sequences in movie history.

The scene had McQueen chasing two hit men in a black Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum.

Ford produced another limited-edition Bullitt in 2001.
