Stocks open lower

NEW YORK, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Stock prices on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market (NASDAQ:NDAQ) were slightly lower in light end of year trading Monday amid a lack of market moving news. The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average, which rose 5.68 points Friday, was down 17.20 points to 10,119.70 shortly after the opening bell. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index, which gained 10.84 points in the previous session, was down 4.06 points to 1,983.20.
