One of Johnny Manziel's lawyers has left the defense team, days after sending an accidental text to The Associated Press saying the troubled quarterback could not stay sober.

Manziel's spokeswomen, Denise Michaels, said she had been told by Manziel's lead attorney Jim Darnell that Hinton withdrew from the case.

Manziel was indicted on criminal charges in May for allegedly hitting ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley in January. If convicted, he faces up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Hinton also texted he had received a receipt indicating the 23-year-old quarterback had spent more than $1,000 on drug paraphernalia less than 24 hours after being involved in an alleged hit-and-run auto accident.

After the latest incident, Manziel's father said his son was a "druggie" and should be put in jail.
