BILLERICA, Mass., May 13 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Security Administration says it has selected American Science and Engineering to provide its screening technologies for a pilot program.

The TSA has been working to implement enhanced passenger and baggage screening technologies at airports across the United States. TSA officials announced the selection of AS&E to provide its trademarked SmartCheck personnel screening system as part of a pilot program at Los Angeles International Airport. AS&E's SmartCheck has already been deployed by the TSA at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The SmartCheck uses AS&E's Z Backscatter X-ray technology used at security checkpoints in Iraq, among other places. The SmartCheck system works by creating an outline image of the passenger that identifies weapons and other threats.

Officials say the X-ray system is an alternative to the traditional pat-down at airport checkpoints. Despite concerns about privacy, AS&E officials say 90 percent of passengers opt for the SmartCheck when asked to undergo additional screening.

"We are pleased to begin another phase of testing with TSA and to assist in their mission to safeguard air travel," Anthony Fabiano, AS&E president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "SmartCheck provides TSA with a comprehensive, safe, non-intrusive, easy and highly effective way to detect plastic and liquid explosives, weapons, and other contraband while ensuring travelers' privacy."
