LONDON, May 9 (UPI) --
The British Ministry of Defense says it has selected General Dynamics UK's Piranha 5 design for its new future rapid effect system utility vehicle.
Defense officials selected Piranha 5 as the first design for the new FRES utility vehicle program. The FRES program is part of a new Ministry of Defense initiative to adjust British military vehicles to reflect the reality of new conflict environments around the world by implementing enhanced capabilities in a wider range of operations.
"The provisional selection of PIRANHA 5 as the FRES Utility Vehicle design heralds the start of a new era for the Army in terms of capability," Gen. Sir Richard Dannatt, chief of the general staff, said in a statement.
"Whilst our protected personnel vehicles such as Mastiff are a very successful addition to meet specific operational requirements in both Iraq and Afghanistan, it is the FRES medium weight capability which will allow the Army to conduct a considerably wider range of operations."
The implementation of the new FRES vehicles will fall into stages beginning with the Piranha 5 utility vehicle followed by complex specialist vehicles in five categories including utility, reconnaissance, medium armor, maneuver support and the basic capability utility.© 2008 United Press International.
