Kongsberg contracted for Renault upgrades

Published: May 8, 2008 at 2:41 PM
WASHINGTON, May 8 (UPI) -- Kongsberg says it has been contracted by Renault to upgrade the French Army's Renault VAB armored personnel carriers with remote weapon stations.

The $100 million, multiyear contract from Renault Trucks Defense of France is for Kongsberg Gruppen subsidiary Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace to provide its Protector RWS technology for an upgrade to the French Army's 4X4 armored personnel carriers.

Kongsberg's Protector RWS enables soldiers to engage targets while still inside their vehicle. Officials say the Protector, currently deployed with the U.S. Army's common remotely operated weapon station program, is capable of being mounted on a variety of vehicles and compatible with several weapon systems currently in use.

"The remote weapon station market is expanding exponentially at the moment for a very good reason: soldier's lives are put at risk in complex conflict areas, and the RWS is saving lives by putting them out of harm's way," Egil Haugsdal, Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace dynamic division executive vice president, said in a statement.
