Defense research funding awards announced

OTTAWA, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Canada's Department of National Defense announced funding awards for new science and technology research projects that address evolving threats to security.

The Defense Research and Development, part of the Department of National Defense announced more than $30 million has been awarded for 20 new research projects. Funded through the Chemical, Biological, Radiological-Nuclear and Explosives Research and Technology Initiative, the announced awards are an initiative to foster defense advances in Canada.

"I would like to congratulate all the teams receiving funding this year," Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defense, said in a statement. "These projects will ensure Canada remains a world leader in science and technology-based security research. The partnerships forged through this unique research initiative are a clear demonstration that cooperation between government, academia and industry can yield great results for a safer Canada."

In order to receive the CBRNE funding, research applicants were required to demonstrate how their project will advance public safety and security.

"It was a requirement that the projects submitted involve collaborations among all levels of government, industry and academia, here in Canada and abroad," Robert Walker, Department of National Defense assistant deputy minister, and chief executive officer of Defense Research and Development Canada. "By fostering these partnerships, the government of Canada is ensuring that the best ideas are brought to the table when it comes to enhancing Canada's safety and security."
