Genco contracted by DLA

Published: Aug. 20, 2007 at 5:15 PM
FORT BELVOIR, Va., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The Defense Logistics Agency has contracted Genco Infrastructure Solutions Inc. for logistics functions in a cost-saving move.

The DLA contracted Pennsylvania-based Genco at the Defense Distribution Depot in Richmond, Va. The decision was made after a call for bids indicated that the DLA would save money by shifting some of the logistics work from federal employees to a contractor.

The 350-acre distribution center's 102 permanent civilian employees will be affected. The DDRV facility manages materials for U.S. military services, foreign military sales customers and other federal agencies worldwide.

Officials estimate Genco's competitive bid could save the DLA approximately $732,000 in operating costs over a five-year period. The total saved is about a 4-percent reduction.

"The DDRV workforce is proud of its service to the Department of Defense and the United States and will continue to support the Department of Defense through transition to the new Service Provider GENCO," said Jerri Taylor, DDRV director, in a statement.

"I anticipate a seamless transition to a contractor operated distribution center. The A-76 public-private competition has been a challenging process for the employees at DDRV. For the past two and a half years while undergoing the A-76 competition process, the employees have continued to serve our nation's warfighters and our fellow countrymen during times of crisis with pride and dignity."
