BRUSSELS, May 12 (UPI) -- U.K. Ministry of Defense announces FRES contract
The British Ministry of Defense announced that the Piranha 5, a medium-weight armed patrol vehicle, has been selected over the Nexter and ARTEC for the Future Rapid Effects System, a statement said.
The Piranha 5, still incomplete, is a bigger version of its predecessor, the Piranha 4, and has superior electronics.
The competition was for some 2,000 vehicles and about $14 billion, and the winner will supply the British army with protected mobility, communication and utility vehicles.
The idea behind FRES is to create a mobile army that can easily be deployed abroad. The Piranha can easily be airlifted into war zones.
