The state reserve bureau already has dispatched 6,313 tons of oil products to the quake-hit areas in the southwest province and plans to send more gasoline and diesel from its stockpiles in the city of Jiangyou in Sichuan province and from Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, the Shanghai Daily reported.
The National Development and Reform Commission said the government also has diverted jet fuel tankers to Shuangliu and Mianyang airports in Sichuan to restore air transport. Already, the China National Aviation Fuel Group Corp. has sent 68 tankers carrying 3,200 tons of jet fuel to these airports, the report said.
"Fuel shortage in the two airports has been solved," the commission said.
Separately, PetroChina Co., the country's leading oil company, said it has resumed fuel distribution in the quake-hit regions, including setting up eight gasoline stations near the Wenchuan epicenter area.
China Petrochemical Corp., parent of the country's second-largest oil company, Sinopec, said the company is now producing a record 6,000 tons of diesel and 1,000 tons of jet fuel a day at its Jingmen refinery in Hubei province to augment the relief effort.
China's official estimate of the death toll from the May 12 earthquake stood at 34,073 as of noon Monday, and the number of injured was 245,108.
The government has mounted a massive relief effort that includes tens of thousands of rescue teams assisted by more than 110,000 people, including police officers and soldiers. The government also has accepted offers from several other nations to send rescue and medical teams.
