LONDON, May 8 (UPI) -- British Energy (NYSE:BGY) remains at the center of a heated bidding war.

As rumors of a quick takeover by EDF circulated, Centrica reportedly is continuing its efforts to remain in the game.

Senior Centrica executives are holding last-minute talks with European power giants, The Independent reported.

The British firm was linked to a bid with EDF until the French firm decided to bid on its own.

Centrica has already tabled an independent offer to British Energy's board but would pay for the purchase using its shares. EDF is expected to offer cash, which Centrica can't.

British Energy operates eight domestic nuclear plants and many want at least some control to remain local as the government auctions its 35 percent stake.

RWE has decided to pull out of the bidding; that decision follows reports that the Swedish government has asked Vattenfall, RWE's preferred partner for a bid, not to participate in the bidding.
