CALGARY, Alberta, March 5 (UPI) --
Oil and gas, as well as mining, led job creation in Canada between 2001 and 2006, a recent report from Statistics Canada says.
The federal agency released the labor force survey, based on the 2006 Census, and employment in the mining and oil and gas industries grew at an average of 7.5 percent per year between 2001 and 2006, the Calgary Sun reported.
Alberta accounted for 70 percent of the growth total in the mining and oil and gas industries, the census data shows.
The number of oil and gas drillers, servicers and testers almost doubled to 11,500 in the five years between the censuses, making it the fastest-growing occupation during that period.
Alberta, as a whole, added 251,100 workers between 2001 and 2006 to the total national workforce, while British Columbia added another 208,800, showing Canada's westernmost provinces accounted for about one-third of the country's employment increase of 1.3 million to 16 million between 2001 and 2006.© 2008 United Press International.
