BRUSSELS, May 28 (UPI) -- A conference in Belgium brought together young European, Israeli and Palestinian leaders in an effort to open a dialogue for peace among a new generation.

The four-day conference, which ended Wednesday, was held at the European Parliament and was hosted by EP President Hans-Gert Pottering. Officials say the young European, Israeli and Palestinian political leaders were brought together to foster confidence and trust among each other during meetings and to open a dialogue aimed at ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The conference, part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, is an effort to bring young political leaders to a neutral environment and establish interpersonal relationships. Workshops during the conference were held on issues including creative solutions for Jerusalem and on identity and sovereignty concerns.

"The involvement of young political leaders is crucial for the transformation of present conflicts into future peace," Pottering said in a statement.

"This platform has enabled young leaders from both sides to exchange views and real life experiences, building the foundation for trust between future generations. Building confidence and trust for future political leaders is essential."
