Mongolia gets heating aid

Published: July 6, 2007 at 11:46 AM
MANILA, Philippines, July 6 (UPI) -- Mongolians will get help keeping warm this coming winter.

The Asian Development Bank together with the Japanese government will provide $2.3 million to improve heating facilities in 12 locations across the country. Specifically, the money will be used to install 25 heat-efficient boiler systems that are also environmentally friendly. Heat in Mongolian homes and buildings is provided primarily by district heating, which is distributed from central heating plants in larger cities and from small boiler houses in less urban areas.

"Residents will benefit from better quality heating services during winter. Boiler efficiency is also expected to increase from 40 percent to 70 percent, and this will help reduce coal consumption and carbon dioxide emission, resulting in reduced air pollution and government savings," said Teruhisa Oi, a social development specialist at the ADB's East Asia department.

Mongolia has about 450 boiler houses, with 1,200 Russian-made boilers that have been used since the 1980s. The ADB said that the condition of the boilers has deteriorated since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, leaving heat efficiency at about 40 percent.
